Particularity of the Dordogne
Stream or river? Two elements support the thesis of the river: The Dordogne has a common estuary with the Garonne and during high tides, a tidal bore (a wave) is formed and goes up the course of the river over nearly 30 km. The Dordogne is the only river in France whose entire basin has been classified as a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
Classified as a "Country of Art and History" in its Lotoise part and as a "Biosphere Reserve" by UNESCO in 2012, the Dordogne is the perfect combination of nature and heritage for a canoe trip. It offers up to 120km of descent, or 7 days of hiking. It is accessible to beginners as well as to the most experienced.
By canoe on the Dordogne river through Corrèze, Lot and Dordogne
Cliffs, villages and castles will punctuate your descent through 3 departments: Corrèze, Lot and Dordogne. You will be able to visit the villages of Beaulieu sur Dordogne, Carennac, Rocamadour, Martel, Souillac, La Roque Gageac... Which will also allow you to get supplies. Perched on top of a cliff, the castles of Belcastel, Treyne or Montfort will surprise you. Without forgetting the richness of the fauna: grey heron, kingfisher, otter, trout, birds of prey...
The river Dordogne has been a source of food and wealth since the beginning of time. At first with fishing (with a fishing permit you can hunt for your dinner!), then with the construction of mills, and then with the transport of goods on flat-bottomed boats called gabares. Thanks to the high quality of its waters, you can enjoy swimming. Its beautiful pebble beaches will also allow you to have nice picnic breaks or to relax as well as a nice space for your bivouacs.
"Be careful not to cross the terrifying Coulobre, a giant (and fortunately mythical!) snake of the Dordogne which used to make the gabariers disappear!
An ideal river for canoeing with family or friends
In short, you will have understood that Dordogne offers you an exceptional and preserved site, an ideal place to live a unique experience and to create unforgettable memories with family or friends. A canoe trip is the promise of a total change of scenery in the middle of a green and wild nature as far as the eye can see. Camp all along the route, in wild bivouac or in camping.
Fill up with greenery by punctuating your stay along the water between swimming and idle time on the pebble beaches.
